Big Brothers, Big Facebook: Your Orwellian Community: This article describes (in a conspiracy-theory manner) the relations of the CIA to The Facebook. It’s all very vague, stemming from the fact that much of Facebook’s initial venture capital came from a guy who is a former chair of another venture capital company, created by the CIA. To me what stood out was a few interesting statements in the Facebook privacy policy:
“Facebook also collects information about you from other sources, such as newspapers and instant messaging services. This information is gathered regardless of your use of the Web Site.”
“we may share account or other information when we believe it is necessary to comply with law or to protect our interests or property (emphasis added). This may include sharing information with other companies, lawyers, agents or government agencies.”
In their defense, they do allow you to request that they not share your information for marketing purposes. The link for this is in the Privacy Policy, under “Sharing Your Information With Third Parties”. Also, feel free to explore the “My Privacy” section, at the bottom of the list of links on the left.
